LAKESIDE, Ohio – July 27, 2007 – The 2nd Annual “Light Up Lakeside” weekend is on the horizon. The event is a wonderful opportunity for Lakesiders to celebrate the last days of summer by showcasing the entire community in illumination. Not only will cottages and local businesses be adorned with colorful, hand-painted lanterns, twinkle lights, and luminaries, but the Candlelight Symphony Showcase will conclude the four-day celebration on August 13.

The idea of lantern illumination was born from the annual Grand Illumination night on Martha’s Vineyard, held one night in August for only a few hours. Porches and balconies are decorated with Chinese lanterns, a tradition that dates back to over a century. The tradition has since migrated to Lake Erie’s Lakeside community. All Lakeside cottages and businesses are encouraged to take part in this celebration by decorating their properties in illumination. Everyone is not expected to hand-paint lanterns, but be creative in the types of lighting used – twinkle lights, Christmas lights, candles, lanterns, luminaries, etc. The C. Kirk Rhein Center will serve as a gathering place to decorate lanterns for the entire Lakeside community. Awards will be given to the homes judged best in these five categories: Most Creative Overall, Best Use of Porch, Most Colorful, Best Patriotic Display, and Best Display of White Lights. Members of the Management Team at the Lakeside Association will serve as judges for this year’s event.

Coinciding with “Light Up Lakeside” weekend will be the 19th Annual Candlelight Symphony Showcase. Luminaries will light the way to four Lakeside homes and the C. Kirk Rhein Center for the Living Arts in this annual night-time tour 8-10 p.m. on August 13. The Lakeside cottages on display include: 421 Oak, Salam Chaudhary and Meredith Meyer; 430 Vine, Kevin and Beth Sibbring; 102 E 4th, Jim and Betty Jane Young; 562 Sycamore, Peg Starcher.

Step back in time and stroll the streets of this charming old Victorian era community. At each stop ticket holders will enjoy listening to lovely classical music played by featured musicians from the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra. Early bird ticket sales begin Monday, July 23 at $35 each. After Friday, July 27, full-priced tickets will be available at $40 each, with proceeds from the showcase benefiting the Lakeside Symphony Endowment Fund. All tickets can be purchased at the Hoover Auditorium ticket booths. Get your tickets early as a limited number are printed for the evening showcase.
