LAKESIDE, Ohio – July 31, 2007 –Lakeside will host another exciting Barbershop Quartet show Labor Day weekend to conclude the Chautauqua’s 2007 summer season. Barbershoppers from all over the great Johnny Appleseed District (JAD) and neighboring districts will visit Lakeside for another special performance of barbershop harmony. Three talented groups, Southern Gateway Chorus, The Allies, and Park Avenue Quartet will each be featured in Lakeside’s historic Hoover Auditorium at 8:15 p.m. Saturday,
September 1.

The Western Hills’ Southern Gateway Chorus, The Allies, and Park Avenue will continue to share the tradition of the barbershop quartet with sentimental ballads in Lakeside’s Hoover Auditorium. The barbershop show will be the final summer program for the Lakeside Association then to be followed on Sunday evening with the community’s closing ceremonies and fireworks on the lake.

This year’s featured chorus will be the Western Hills’ Southern Gateway Chorus from Cincinnati, Ohio. The chorus will be celebrating its 51st year by fulfilling its vision of being a world-class chorus. Over the years, this talented group has delivered high-energy performances for audiences in 24 major cities throughout the United States and Canada. This chorus has won the JAD Chorus Championship several times and also won the International Chorus Competition in 1973 and 1992 plus 22 International Chorus Competition medals.

The Allies from the Greater Central Ohio Chapter combine youth and experience in a cool new quartet. The group has diverse musical backgrounds, but has come together through The Alliance Chorus. Each of the four members is an active member of the two-time international medalist chorus and is proud to perform as an Alliance chapter quartet. The Allies Quartet placed as Quartet Finalist (Top 10) in this past International Quartet Competition held in Denver in July.

Park Avenue Quartet from The Singing Buckeyes (Columbus) and Heart of Ohio (Grove City) Chapters will also appear on stage Labor Day weekend. This will truly be a show of champions. Park Avenue was formed in January of 2000. The four experienced barbershoppers of Park Avenue decided it would be fun to start the new millennium with a brand new group and a brand new sound. All members worked very hard to establish their new sound and the work paid off in October 2000 when they became the JAD Champions. Since that time, the quartet has enjoyed performing shows all over the country.

Serving as the master of ceremonies to move the show along in a professional manor will be Michael Banish, the current JAD president.

The classic barbershop quartet is often characterized as four dandies decked out with straw hats, striped vests and handlebar mustaches. These caricatures of the barbershop tradition are not only a quaint symbol of small-town Americana, but have some historical foundation. Barbershop music was indeed borne out of informal gatherings of amateur singers in such unpretentious settings as the local barbershop. While barbershop has been an ever-changing musical art form, certain hallmarks of the style seem to have remained implacable for well over a century. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally, the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completes the chord.
