Celebrating Grand-Parents on Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day on Sunday will take on a special meaning for Peggy Pedersen. Peggy is one of many local grandparents who raise their grandchildren. Ms. Pedersen said, “It’s nice to know you’re not alone, other people are going through the same thing.” Judy Fitchpatric is another grandparent raising her grandchildren. Research from the Ohio Department of Aging and Bowling Green State University show that 10% of children 18 and under are being raised by grandparents. The Area Office on Aging began sponsoring the Kinship Navigator Program six years ago. This program provides the following services to grandparents raising their grandchildren:

• Educational enrichment and support meetings, Kinship Clubs, are provided for Kinship families every week with free meals, adult and children’s programming and child care.
• One-time financial assistance for the grandparents to purchase beds, clothing and other necessities for the grandchildren.
• Information and assistance on topics such as behavior management, legal issues and how grandparents can go about enrolling their grandchildren in school.

The care these grandparents have for their grandchildren runs so deep that when they see their grandchildren being exposed by their parents to drugs or being neglected in other ways that make the lives of the grandchildren chaotic, the grandparents step in and take on the responsibility for raising the grandchildren,” says Judy Paschalis, Kinship Navigator Program Coordinator.

Ms. Fitchpatric says “the services from the Kinship Navigator Program have been very positive for me. In fact, without this program, my grandchildren wouldn’t be with me today.”

The Kinship Navigator Program is sponsored by the Area Office on Aging, with funding from Lucas County Job & Family Services, Lucas County Children Services and the Area Office on Aging’s Family Caregiver Support Program. A grant from the Zonta Club of Toledo 1 partially provides for emergency financial assistance. The Kinship Navigator Program has won many national achievement awards.
