(Lucas County, OH) On Saturday, October 27, 9:00 a.m. at The Lucas County Court House on Adams Street, as part of Make A Difference Day, and “Red Ribbon Week” the Girl Scouts will be participating in a tree planting ceremony and a “Drug Free March”. Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others — a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. In celebration Girl Scouts will be planting a tree at the courthouse to beautify the neighborhood. The Scouts will then participate in the drug free march which highlights the year round message of being alcohol, tobacco and drug-free. Underage drinking is a major factor in nearly all leading causes of mortality and morbidity for youth ages five to twenty-five.

The Girl Scouts of Maumee Valley have partnered with the Elks Toledo #53 Lodge and the Lucas County Sheriff’s D.A.R.E. Program and Community Partnership, in order to increase promoting the message of being “drug-free” to residents of northwest Ohio, to effectively preventing drug abuse and educating Ohio’s youth about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse.

To kick off the Girl Scout march, Deputy Sheriff Brett Warner, D.A.R.E. Officer of the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office will speak to the group on the history of “Red Ribbon Week” and its importance to our youth. The Elks Drug Free trailer will be offering many educational pieces distributed by George Litten, Elks Northwest District Drug Awareness Chair. Mr. Litten will also distribute “Banded Together Against Drug” rubber bracelets, rulers that read “I RULE OUT DRUGS!” red ribbons and stickers to the marchers. Deacon Dzierzawski, CEO of Community Partnership will also be speaking in support of the Girl Scouts “Drug Free March” and its importance during Red Ribbon Week.

“Red Ribbon Week is a chance to be visible and vocal in our desire for a drug-free community,” said Laura Bowerman, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Maumee Valley Council. “Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse.”
