Winesburg Christmas Weekend in downtown Clyde, Ohio is undergoing a few changes in 2007.
“The committee moved this year’s parade and weekend of events by two weeks,” according to event co-chairperson Becky Brooks.
Instead of having the Santa Parade before Thanksgiving, this year the annual evening parade will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. Santa will visit children in his downtown house after the parade and throughout the weekend.
The reason for the move is two-fold. The committee members agreed it was better to move the event closer to Christmas and also agreed it was not fair to pit Santa Claus against Brutus Buckeye.
In 2006, Santa Claus arrived in downtown Clyde just moments before the end of the Ohio State – Michigan game. Many Buckeye fans were openly joyful at the outcome of the game, but perplexed that they could not witness the victory, according to Brooks.
Thus, this year the parade will be back on a Friday night, and be two weeks later.
Winesburg Weekend – named for the famous book “Winesburg, Ohio” written by Clyde native Sherwood Anderson – will run Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2. This annual Clyde celebration was begun in 1976 by members of the Clyde Business & Professional Association, which still coordinates this event today.
Another big addition to Winesburg Weekend will be the annual Holiday Performance of the Toledo Symphony at the Clyde High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.
That event is sponsored by the Community for the Arts. Reserve seat tickets are available starting Nov. 3 at the Clyde-Green Springs Board of Education Office, 419-547-0588. Cost is $15.
Winesburg Weekend still offers many of its traditional activities.
Horse drawn trolley tours will be offered through downtown Clyde on Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by the City of Clyde and the Heritage League.
The annual Santa Breakfast will be Saturday morning at Our Town’s Brewin with attendance by reservation only at 419-547-1397.
The Winesburg Committee is bringing in a new HO model train display to the Moose Hall on Maple Avenue. This display is being operated by the Norwalk Train Group and is free to the public.
Of course, Santa will be at his house on the plaza, sponsored again this year by The Bellevue Hospital. Visiting children will again be able to register for the Wagon of Toys raffle – with a red wagon and toys donated by Moyer Lawn Care, Foos Funeral Home and Mary’s Pampered Pets.
Christmas Lane, a display of trees and wreaths, will again be open throughout the weekend in the Clyde City Building on Main Street. A donation at the door supports the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
On Saturday, craft shows will be held at both the Clyde Eagles Hall on South Main Street and the VFW Hall on West Maple Street.
