Area Schools congratulate Wendy's HS Heisman nominees

Area High Schools SALUTE OUTSTANDING STUDENT APPLICANTS AND SCHOOL WINNERS IN THE RACE FOR THE
2007 WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN

(Pemberville, Ohio) (Oct. 31, 2007) – Pertoria, Inc. dba Wendy’s is extending a special congratulations to Benjamin Hammer, Elmwood; Chelsea Nissen, Genoa; Jordan Kirwen, Gibsonburg; Camille Wasserman, Lakota; Stephanie Loomis and Stephen Roberts, Fostoria who were named School Winners for the prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. To be eligible for this award, students must display academic aptitude, athletic talent and exceptional commitment to their communities.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman program, awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman, celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors both in and out of the classroom. Just as the collegiate Heisman is known for being the top award in college football, the WHSH award is known for being the most prestigious award at the high school level. The award encourages future leadership by recognizing well-balanced lifestyles at an early age.

These student athletes were selected as School Winners based on the following accomplishments:

Benjamin Hammer, son of Jim and Linda Hammer, has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, a baseball volunteer coach, 2007 Homecoming King and a volunteer at Martha’s Kitchen. He is a 4 yr. letter winner in baseball, 4 yr. letter winner in football & 3 yr. letter winner in basketball. He has All League, All County, District and All State Honors in baseball. He holds several Elmwood career offensive records and has been selected for Team Ohio twice. He has accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Toledo. Football: league, county & district honors. Basketball: league, cty. & district honors.

Chelsea Nissen, daughter of Al and Kay Nissen, has a 3.9 GPA, is 1st in her class and is a member of the National Honor Society, is All SLL Academic, All Ohio Academic, a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, member of Key Club and attends Owens College partime. She has letters in volleyball, earning All SLL and All District honors.

Jordan Kirwen, son of Bill and Connie Kirwen, has a 3.9 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society, Key Club, S.A.D.D., and F.C.A. He is a 3 yr. letter winner in Cross Country, a 3 yr. letter winner in Track & Field, and a 2 yr. letter winner in Basketball. In Cross Country, he earned All League, All District, All Regional and All State honors. He also is Academic All Ohio. In Track & Field, he has All League, All District, Regional and State honors. He is also Academic All Ohio. In Basketball, he has All League & All District honors and helped his team into the Regional Playoffs. He has been Toledo Blade Athlete of the Week and News-Messenger Male Runner of the Year.

Camille Wasserman, daughter of Roger and Barb Wasserman , has a 4.0 GPA and is ranked 1st in her class. She is a member and president of National Honor Society, Varsity “L” member, Honor Roll all 4 years and a 4-H member 8 yrs. She is a 4 yr. Varsity letter winner in Volleyball, captain, All League honors, All District honors, and League & District Player of the Year. She is a 2 yr. Varsity letter winner in Basketball. She is also a 3 yr. Varsity letter winner in Track & Field—pole vaulting, where she has earned All League, All District, All Regional and All State honors.

Stephen Roberts, son of Mark Roberts and Lynn Tucker-Roberts, is ranked 16th in his class and a member of the National Honor Society and winner of the Awesome Underclassmen leadership award. He is a member of Band (1st Chair Trombone), Choir, Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir. He is also active in Faith A.M.E. Church with youth and choir. He is a 4 yr. letter winner and 3 yr. captain in Football, earning School, All League and All District Honors, including Scholar Athlete, Boosters and Coaches Awards. He is a 3 yr. letter winner & 2 yr. captain in Basketball. He also is a 3 yr. letter winner in Track & Field.

Stephanie Loomis, daughter of Thom and Peggy Loomis, has a 3.1 GPA and is on FHS Honor Roll, a student tutor, student mentor, Yearbook Editor, FHS Newspaper Editor, and has earned FHS Scholar Athlete Award and NOL Scholar Athlete . She is a 4 yr. letter winner in Softball with school records for stolen bases in a season and Top Ten in runs scored; Archie Griffin Award, Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player. She is also a 4 yr. letter winner in Basketball, earning Rookie of the Year Award and Leadership Award.

“Benjamin Hammer, Chelsea Nissen, Jordan Kirwen, Camille Wasserman, Stephen Roberts and Stephanie Loomis are future leaders and will represent the schools well in the next phase of judging,” said Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Memorial Trophy and Wendy’s High School Heisman program spokesperson. “I’m proud to be involved with an award that embodies the spirit of the Heisman tradition of hard work, dedication and an outstanding record both on and off the field.”

Created in 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman program has celebrated youth excellence for 14 years. The program consists of six phases – Applicants, School Winners, State Finalists, State Winners, National Finalists and National Winners. Entries are initially evaluated by ACT Assessment during the Applicant, State Finalist and State Winner phases and then passed on to a distinguished panel of judges.

Twelve National Finalists are invited to participate in Heisman weekend festivities during an all-expense paid trip to New York City on Dec. 7 – 9. ESPN2 will feature all 12 National Finalists during the Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards Ceremony, which airs on Dec. 9.
