The 2007-2008 UT Jazz MASTER SERIES, November 6 & 7: Award Winning Author and Jazz Historian Ashley Kahn to Speak, and The UT Jazz Faculty with UT’s Distinguished Professor of Jazz, JON HENDRICKS to Perform

As part of its Jazz Master Series 2007-2008, The University of Toledo Department of Music welcomes award-winning jazz author and historian, Ashley Kahn, to the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall on UT’s main campus, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 6 and 7, 2007. Kahn will present two lectures, one each day and the UT Jazz Faculty will perform on Wednesday.

Kahn will present a lecture on his book, “Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece,” Tuesday, November 6 at 4 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a book signing in the lobby. On Wednesday, November 7, at 3 p.m., Kahn will discuss his book, “A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album.” This lecture is also free and open to the public.

At 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 7, the UT Jazz Faculty will perform the music from “A Love Supreme” in a special concert featuring jazz legend, Jon Hendricks, as well as Gunnar Mossblad (saxophone), Jay Weik (guitar), Tim Whalen (piano), Norm Damschroder (bass), and Jonathan Ovalle (drums). Tickets are $5 for the general public, and $3 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the door.

Ashley Kahn is a music journalist and radio producer whose voice is often heard on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition,” and whose writing yields books, feature articles, liner notes, and a number of awards, including two ASCAP/Deems Taylors and a Grammy nomination. He has authored “The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records” (W.W. Norton & Co.); “A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album” (Viking/Penguin) and “Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece” (Da Capo Press); and directed and produced the documentary Made in Heaven: The Story of Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue (Sony/BMG Music.) He also teaches music history and criticism at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music.)

During a thirty-year career in the music business, Kahn has served as a music editor at VH1, the primary editor of Rolling Stone: The Seventies (Little, Brown), a deejay on a variety of radio stations, and – for a ten-year stint – a tour manager, globe-hopping with a multitude of music groups, including: Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Debbie Harry & the Jazz Passengers and yes, Britney Spears. He has also been a concert producer, producing music festivals in New York City (Central Park Summer Stage and JVC Jazz), New Orleans (Jazz & Heritage Festival), and Cape Town, South Africa.

Kahn contributes full-length features to such publications as The Wall Street Journal, JazzTimes and MOJO (UK); and essays for a number of music and video releases.

The Jazz Master Series is made possible by financial support from the Loraine and Melinese Reuter Foundation and The University of Toledo Department of Music.
