Wood County Law Enforcement, led by Deputy Becky Parker, DARE Officer for the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, has implemented the “Shop with a Cop” program. In 2006, Deputy Parker approached Wal-Mart Community Involvement Coordinator Kylie Rogers and requested the involvement of the local Department Store.

The funding for the program was raised by community donations and the selling of raffle tickets with the prizes being donated by Wal-Mart. Domino’s Pizza in Bowling Green helped raise funds by donating a percentage of their sales during one regular business day. Pertoria, Inc., the Wendy’s franchisee in Wood County, made a monetary donation as well as provided each child with a Free Classic Single Combo coupon.

Last year, enough money was raised for 106 children to receive $75.00 to go shopping for a coat, pair of boots, clothing or any items of necessity before visiting the toy dept. The goal this year was to reach out to 150 children and through the efforts of many Wood County police officers and the community, the program exceeded its goal! Law enforcement officers will be escorting 180 children and spending $80.00 on each child.

Children will be accompanied by a local law enforcement officer which will allow children to interact with officers in a positive way, which helps to build their trust in knowing they have someone to turn to in time of need. Participating agencies include the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Bowling Green Police Dept., Lake Township Police Dept., Perrysburg Township Police Dept., Northwood Police Dept., Rossford Police Dept., Wayne Police Dept., Bradner Police Dept., Luckey Police Dept., North Baltimore Police Dept., Ohio Highway Patrol Bowling Green Post, Wood County Park District, Bowling Green State University Police Dept., Wood County Sheriff’s Auxillary and Explorers. The selection process for children was a collaboration between local school districts, the Salvation Army, Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Cocoon Shelter in Bowling Green.

Pertoria, Inc. has 7 Wendy’s locations in Wood County and Oregon, Ohio. Owners Dave and Becky Williams support a number of programs through out the year to benefit children in our area. Wendy’s was represented at the “Shop with a Cop” event by cashier Liz Carpenter from the South Main location, who played Wendy.
