ALMA DRUM & DANCE IN PERFORMANCE AT THE TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART

ALMA Drum & Dance returns for a performance at the Toledo Museum of Art, as part of the annual “Winter Legacies” series. ALMA’s performance will take place this Sunday, December 30th , at 3:30pm, in The Great Gallery, and will feature a set of traditional West African drum and dance. This is the fourth year that ALMA will be performing in this popular winter concert series at the museum.

ALMA’s performance will be preceded by a dance performance by Middle Eastern dance troupe Leyla & Lapis Lazuli, at 2:30pm. The two group’s performances will also feature collaborative pieces featuring members of ALMA drumming for the Lazulis, and “Raks Habibis”, a dance collaborative featuring members of both groups performing folkloric middle eastern dance and wearing traditional costumes. These concerts are both free and open to the public.

ALMA Drums – A Community Drumming Circle will be returning the studio of Still Waters Yoga, in Monclova for a monthly community drumming circle, on the third Sunday of each month, and beginning Sunday, January 19th, 2008, running from 12:30pm till 1:30pm. The drum circle will take place in the studio of Still Waters Yoga, located in the Monclova Community Center, 8115 Monclova Rd, in Monclova Ohio (www.stillwatersyoga.com). ALMA Drums is open to musicians of all ages, with no experience necessary. A $5 donation is requested.

ALMA Drum & Dance is a group of professional musicians and dancers bonded in the study and performance of traditional West African drum & dance, as well as, modern dance, and most recently, Middle Eastern drum and dance styles. ALMA performs regularly for the public, offers classes in West African drumming & dancing for young people and adults, provides workshops to a wide variety of local groups, runs afterschool dance programs, presents education programs as a part of the Arts in Education Project of Toledo Public Schools, and collaborates regularly with other artists in multi-arts events happening in Toledo, Bowling Green and Detroit.

    I am so interested in learning more. I have been working with children in Findlay teaching traditional and modern
    african dances and drumming through the schools and workshops. I also teach dances of many countries. I am a former teacher in the school system and have a passion to learn more and more. Are there opportunities to become involved?
