East Toledo – RAISED BED GARDENS and RAIN GARDENS for the Garfield Heights neighborhood!

– What could be healthier than walking out your back door and gathering the necessary items to toss your own salad or season your own dishes?
– Want to grow your own vegetables and herbs?
– How about sharing your bumper crop with a friend or neighbor?
– Do you want to learn how to safely divert rainwater away from your
home and use it to aid your flower gardens?
– Do you have difficulty getting down on the ground to weed and care for plants?
– What if there was a program, at no cost to you, to have a raised bed garden
or rain garden built on your lot and provide you with the necessary plants?

Block Watch 421B will hold a meeting on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Garfield Elementary School Cafeteria. On hand will be Representatives from Toledo Grows, American Rivers, City of Toledo Environmental Services and LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) who will speak on this unique program.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a pilot program and enrollment is currently limited to home owners in the Block Watch 421B area in the Garfield Heights Neighborhood. This neighborhood is roughly encompassed by Essex/East Broadway, Front Street, Dearborn, Colorado/N. Ravine. If the program has good participation and success, it may be expanded. Please come to this meeting to ensure you are included in this great program!

Come to the February meeting to get all the information you need to have a raised bed garden or rain garden in your yard this spring. Bring a friend or neighbor!

By summer’s end, you’ll be healthier and happier for it! Not only that, but our Garfield neighborhood will be more vibrant and beautiful!

– Officers Sue Surgo and Tom Davis, Our Community Service Officers
– Patrol Officers on duty occasionally stop in when they are not on a call.
– District 3 Councilman Mike Craig (as his schedule permits)
