Annual Paczki Sale Returns to Lagrange Neighborhood

Posted Jan 30th, 2008 by Beth Lewandowski  Category: Community Interest, Toledo.com

It’s that time of year to once again fill up on tasty Paczki. This is the 17th year for the annual sale of the traditional Polish pastry. The three day event brings hundreds of customers to the Lagrange neighborhood to get their fill before the beginning of Lent.

The making of Paczki is a generations old tradition brought to Toledo by our Polish ancestors. The pastry was made for the family just before the fasting period of Lent was to begin.

Seventeen years ago LVC brought this tradition to the public with its first sale held in conjunction with the Ohio Theatre. Each year since, the event has gotten bigger and bigger and eventually moved out of the Ohio Theatre to a different site on Lagrange Street. We believe that our Paczki are the most like traditional, homemade Paczki that many remember their busia (grandmother) used to make.

This year’s event will be located at 2848 Lagrange Street in the newly renovated Shoppes on Lagrinka. There is ample parking in the parking lot located behind the shoppes or on the street. The dates for the sale will be Sunday, February 3 from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM, Monday, February 4 from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM, and Fat Tuesday, February 5 from 5:00 AM until 4:00 PM or until we are sold out. We will have nine flavor’s of Paczki—raspberry, apricot, raisin, plain, custard, lemon, prune (the most traditional filling), blueberry and apple. Paczki sell for $6 a half dozen. We will also have Polish coffeecakes on sale for $10.00.

The Super Bowl of Paczki Eating Contests will be held on Monday starting at 10:00 AM. Members of the Woodward High School football team will take on last year’s winners from Bowser High School.

So we encourage everyone to come on over to the Polish International Village and get their Paczki. We have 1700+ dozens ordered and they will go fast. You may pre-order by calling our office at 419-255-8406 or visit our web site at www.lagrangedevelopment.org and click on the 2008 Paczki Sale link to obtain an order form.
