t’s a spectacular showpiece, A fantastic symphony. Guest conductor Yoav Talmi makes his return to Toledo as he leads the Toledo Symphony in Symphonie fantastique, the vivid masterpiece of Hector Berlioz. The performance will take place Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23 at 8:00 p.m. at The Peristyle.
The Symphonie fantastique is regarded as the first program symphony, a large-scale orchestral work that tells a definite story without the use of words; in this case a story brimming over with intoxication, nightmares, pastoral scenes, a fancy-dress ball, and a march to the scaffold complete with execution. Maestro Talmi brings significant experience with Symphonie fantastique, having recorded an all-Berlioz cycle on the Naxos label.
Guest conductor Yoav Talmi, the Artistic Director of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, will also lead the orchestra with one of his own compositions, an original paraphrase based on Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro overture. This is a Toledo Symphony premier. Also on the program, Concertmaster Kirk Toth and Principal Violist Valentin Ragusitu perform one of Mozart’s noblest creations – his Sinfonie Concertante for violin and viola.
A pre-concert lecture will be held at 7 p.m. onstage at the Peristyle on Friday and Saturday evening.
