The APICS Toledo chapter will be holding a Professional Development Seminar titled “Lean Manufacturing versus Traditional Cost Accounting” on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. The seminar will be held at the University of Toledo Student Union Room 2592 and will be jointly sponsored with the University of Toledo APICS Chapter.
This seminar will review the evolution of manufacturing strategy towards today’s time-based competitive environment and the lost relevance of management accounting practice in relation to these developments. Today’s advanced manufacturing strategies are often undermined by the legacy cost accounting systems designed for a bygone era in manufacturing. In response to the hypercompetitive global business environment, many manufacturing firms have adopted strategies such as time-based manufacturing. Despite its potential contribution to management accounting and operations management, researchers and practitioners alike have largely disregarded the impact of management accounting practice on manufacturing performance. We will also look at some recent studies, which offer alternatives to existing management accounting practices and better link manufacturing strategy to product cost.
The seminar will be presented by Robert Hutchinson, an assistant professor of accounting at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, where he teaches cost accounting at both an undergraduate and graduate level. His current research focuses on directly linking strategic manufacturing measures to product cost for managerial decision making. His research is grounded by several years of industry experience within the corporate finance departments of two Fortune 500 manufacturing firms, where as a cost analyst, plant controller, financial auditor, and senior operations auditor he saw firsthand the perverse effects of misaligned costing systems on manufacturing performance. Robert’s educational background includes a BSBA in accountancy from Duquesne University, an MBA in manufacturing management from the University of Notre Dame, and a PhD in manufacturing management and engineering from the University of Toledo
The cost is $30 for non-members, $25.00 for APICS, Toledo Chamber, and Maumee Chamber members and $15.00 for student members. This includes a dinner buffet of: Caesar salad, pasta salad, vegetable lasagna, chicken parmesan, whipped garlic potatoes, green beans amandine, beverage and dessert.
