Although computers play a major role in the everyday lives of many Americans, there are many more that are still unfamiliar with computers and how to use them. Because the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library strives to bring its patrons programs that are helpful and meaningful, in 2008 the Library will offer many computer skills classes designed to make computers accessible to everyone.

The Library offers classes from basic computer and mouse skill programs to Internet, e-mail and eBay programs. Various computer classes will be available at area Library locations through May and are free and open to the public, though registration is required.

In April, Library computer security expert Dave Misko will host programs at both the Locke and Maumee branches. These computer security programs will teach participants how to protect themselves from identity theft, fraud and viruses.

Misko’s first program is scheduled at the Locke Branch Library, 703 Miami St. from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 7. The second program, on Wednesday, April 9, is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Maumee Branch Library, 501 River Rd.

For patrons who would like one-on-one tutoring, the Library offers personal e-mail, Internet, and Library catalog training. Patrons can schedule a 30-minute session with a librarian to learn these skills.

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library also offers library database training, beginner and intermediate word processing and Internet training, and online search engine training. These classes are available at various Library locations through May.

A complete list of computer training events can be found at toledolibrary.org in the Programs & Events drop-down menu under Computer Classes.
