Toledo, Ohio—The Toledo Museum of Art announced today that Edmund Henry Osthaus’s
painting Afield (about 1900) was voted the visitor favorite in the recent exhibition Mummies to
Monet: The Libbeys Collect.
To complement college basketball’s “March Madness” tournament, Mummies to Monet provided
its own “Sweet Sixteen” single-elimination tournament bracket, allowing visitors to vote for their
favorite works of art in the exhibition. A total of 5,833 votes were cast, leading to the final
showdown between Edmund Henry Osthaus’s painting Afield and the mummy cartonnage of Ta-
Mit. Afield earned the title of champion by 308 votes over its competitor’s 267.
“The Libbeys provided support to the Museum in so many important ways. The Sweet 16 gave
visitors a chance to express their opinions about what they felt was the Libbeys’ most important
gift to TMA,” said Steve Nowak, TMA Director of Exhibitions and Interpretive Programs. “With
most of the exhibition falling in March, a playoff bracket seemed like a natural way to bring
March Madness to TMA.”
