WHAT: Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt and Minor League BaseballTM have teamed up to launch the BPH Game Plan Starts with U: Catch the Whole Game, a national program to raise awareness of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as enlarged prostate[i], and to urge men to get annual prostate screenings and to talk to their doctors.

Four out of 5 men develop BPH in their lifetime. Mike Schmidt is one of the millions of men in the United States who are affected by the symptoms of BPH[ii]. Best known for playing in 12 All-Star Games and leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Series victory in 1980, Schmidt began experiencing frequent and urgent needs to use the bathroom when he turned 50. At his family’s urging, he reluctantly went to see his doctor who diagnosed him with BPH, one of the most common health problems in older men2. Now, Schmidt is managing his symptoms and is motivating other men to take action with their doctors to find the right treatment for them. Schmidt will be appearing at Minor League BaseballTM ballparks in five cities, including the Toledo, Ohio area to increase awareness among men age 50 and over about BPH.
