Toledo Youth Orchestra Presents Winter Pops Concert

Kick off your holiday season with the Toledo Youth Orchestra at the Winter Pops! Concert on Monday, November 24 at 8:00pm in the Sylvania Southview High School Auditorium.

The concert will be filled with seasonal favorites including Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and Anderson’s Sleigh Ride surrounded by silver screen hits Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lord of the Rings. The program also includes a medley of Bernstein’s West Side Story, Vaughan Williams’ Fantaisia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.

Newly under the artistic administration of the Toledo Symphony, the Toledo Youth Orchestra is comprised of 100 auditioned members representing 27 schools from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Partnership support is provided by the Toledo Public Schools, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Symphony League, and Bowling Green State University.

Tickets can be purchased at the door: $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Meet the Conductor:

Dr. Kenneth Thompson, Artistic Director/Conductor of the Toledo Youth Orchestra, is currently an assistant professor in the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University. He holds a doctor of musical arts in conducting and a master’s degree in music education from The University of Iowa and bachelor’s degrees in music education and trumpet from Limestone College in South Carolina. At BGSU, Dr. Thompson teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting and repertoire, band methods, coordinates student teaching seminar and supervises instrumental techniques and field experience placements. As a member of the conducting faculty, he has responsibilities with ensembles in the band area, and serves as the director of the New Music Ensemble. His research on conducting and pedagogy is published in numerous national and international journals and periodicals. In demand as a guest conductor and speaker, Dr. Thompson maintains an active schedule providing rehearsal clinics and adjudication for hundreds of bands and orchestras throughout the US and Canada.
