Celebrate the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library celebrates the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln with a host of exciting programs and activities for the community at Main Library, 325 Michigan St., downtown Toledo.

Lincoln (1809-1865) served as the 16th President of the United States. He is best remembered as leading the country through the American Civil War and ending slavery. Lincoln was the first Republican U.S. president. Lincoln was elected in 1860 and served in office from 1861 to 1865. Lincoln’s assassination in 1865 also made him the first president to be assassinated in American history.

Join us for the following Abraham Lincoln programs and activities:

February 1 – March 9, 2009?Main Library will showcase the popularity of the log cabin quilt during Lincoln’s presidency by displaying a variety of log cabin quilts, along with a doll quilt, Lincoln Logs, and a bronze life mask of Mr. Lincoln.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009   10 a.m. to 4 p.m.?History and Art Sale, Classics Gift Shop at Main Library, Garage Level, 325 Michigan St. Find great new and used history and art books and much more daily, at low prices!

Thursday, February 12, 2009   6:30 p.m.?Special guest speaker, John Swearingen?In the McMaster Center of Main Library, hear Mr. Swearingen, the former Director of Collections & Exhibits at the Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne, IN. He will feature rare photos and present excerpts from his exhibit, “The Lincoln Family Album.” We’ll even have a birthday cake!

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 6:45 p.m.?Feature movie presentation of Young Mr. Lincoln?This classic film is a critically acclaimed fictionalized account of Abraham Lincoln’s years as a young lawyer in the 1800s. Henry Fonda shines in the title role, granting insight into the great future leader. The film will be shown in the McMaster Center of Main Library.

Lincoln for Literacy
Main Library and all branch locations are promoting Lincoln for Literacy. We will collect Lincoln pennies to be donated to the Read for Literacy program now through May 31, 2009. So join in the fun and donate those pennies for literacy! Call Read for Literacy at 419.242.7323 for more information. We encourage educators to bring their classes and all of our community’s patrons and guest to join in on the Lincoln 200th celebration at your Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.
