Toledo, OH – Each spring our Opera on Wheels program goes “on the road” for two months to area elementary schools. This year’s production, a touring version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, opened at Washington Local’s McGregor School on April 2nd and, 61 performances later, will close on May 29th at Rossford’s Indian Hills School. During that time, Pirates is traveling throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, from Chelsea and Ann Arbor to Bucyrus, Tiffin, and, of course, Toledo.

This year’s resident artists (a soprano, tenor and bass baritone) were hired in national auditions in New York. They are living in the community for two months, devoting their time to performing Pirates. Accompanied by a pianist, the artists take on a number of roles as they sing and act their way through the operetta. Gilbert and Sullivan wrote their zany pirate comedy a century before Pirates of the Caribbean. The 45-minute touring version tells the story of young Frederick’s struggles to free himself from servitude to the infamous Pirate King so that he can marry the lovely Mabel. In the role of the Major General, tenor Tyler Thompson sings part of the famous patter song, “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General.”

The Opera on Wheels program brings all that is needed for the performance, including a set, costumes, props, piano and, above all, professionally trained opera artists who perform without a microphone. They provide a multi-media experience for all students in the school, usually in a gymnasium or cafeteria. The experience of seeing opera “live” is in one student’s words “AWESOME!” Another student accolade from 2008: “You rock!”

Following is a schedule of the remaining May performances, most of which are in Toledo or a neighboring district. If you would like to attend a performance, please contact the school directly or Loviah Aldinger at the opera (419-255-7464; laldinger@toledoopera.org).
