Don’t miss Quilting for Black Swamp, an annual exhibition of premium quilts, on display May 15-17 at Toledo Mennonite Church, located at 5501 Nebraska Avenue. The exhibition is free and open to the public on Friday, May 15 from 1 to 6 pm; Saturday, May 16 from 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, May 17 from 1 to 4 pm.
This year’s impressive collection showcases more than two dozen of the handmade quilts and wall hangings that will be up for auction at the 8th Annual Black Swamp Benefit on June 19-20. Proceeds from the event help to support the critical good work of Sunshine Inc. and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
The highlight of Quilting for Black Swamp is the 2009 feature quilt, “The Wheels”. This contemporary quilt, designed by Carolyn Rich of Bluffton, Ohio, is truly a remarkable work of art. Rich’s inspiration for the colorful, intricate design came out of her realization that “Wheels pull us toward a common goal. Wheels lighten our load. Wheels carry us along when we cannot carry on alone.” This is a fitting tribute to the mission of the Black Swamp Benefit, which was created with the dual purpose of raising funds and awareness for Sunshine Inc. and MCC.
Sunshine Inc. provides residential, vocational, and family support services to people with developmental disabilities throughout northwest Ohio. MCC is the national/international disaster relief and humanitarian aid agency of the Mennonite Church, working to ease human suffering around the world.
“The Wheels” and all other quilts on display will be sold during the Black Swamp Benefit, held at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon. Visitors can preview quilts and other auction items beginning on Friday, June 19, from 4 pm – 9 pm, and place bids on select items during a silent auction and a mini live auction. The main live auction begins at 9 am on Saturday, and includes quilts, wall hangings, furniture and handcrafted wood items. The two-day event will also feature lots of great food, a variety of children’s activities, a 5K Run/Walk and a youth Oozeball (mud volleyball) tournament.
