Gracie Simmons Memorial Concert

Posted Aug 26th, 2009 by Dennis Oblander  Category: Events, Toledo.com

Country rocker Hunter Brucks performs at The Gracie Simmons Memorial Concert set for 7 p.m. Sept. 17, 2009 at the La-Z-Boy Center Meyer Theater. The theater is located on the Monroe County Community College campus, 1555 S. Raisinville Road, Monroe, MI.

Brucks will perform “In the Arms of an Angel (Gracie’s Song),” a memorial song he wrote at the request of the family of Gracie A. Simmons of Carleton, who lost her life to domestic violence in 2006 at the age of 17 months. A fund-raising CD of the song was released last April. Proceeds of the CD and concert benefit the “Sunrise House” women’s shelter in Monroe.

“I’m hoping the song continues to touch those who have lost little ones to an untimely death,” Brucks said, “and will continue to keep the wonderful memory of Gracie alive in us all.”

The concert is the culmination of a grass roots effort targeting domestic violence that caught the attention of state Sen. Randy Richardville (R–Monroe), who helped secure the venue. Miss Monroe County Scholarship Program Co-Executive Director Dione Oerther came on board to enlist a number of local performers to round out the evening’s entertainment. Emceeing the event will be Kaye Lani Rae Rafko-Wilson, Miss America 1988 and Miss Monroe County Scholarship Program Executive Director.

Doors open at 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 at the door. VIP seats are $25. Tickets may also be ordered at www.inthearmsofanangel.org or by calling Shannon at 1-734-755-6727. Copies of the fund-raising CD, $10, and further information are available at the Web site.
