Jazz legend and University of Toledo Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies, Jon Hendricks, will be celebrating his 88th birthday with a Birthday Bash, Monday, September 14 at Murphy’s Place for Jazz, located at 151 Water Street in downtown Toledo. There will be two shows on that date, at 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The concert is special for another reason: Hendricks was recently added to ASCAP’s Jazz Wall of Fame.

Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and $10 for general public. There will also be preferred seating tickets offered for $20 each. Proceeds after expenses benefit the UT Jazz Studies program. Hendricks will perform with the UT Faculty Jazz Group. The musicians are:
• Gunnar Mossblad, saxophone
• Jay Weik, guitar
• Tim Whalen, piano
• Norm Damschroder, bass
• Jonathan Ovalle, drums

Well known for his vocal talent, Hendricks is especially renowned for his development of the jazz form known as “vocalese.” He is the creator of the Manhattan Transfer album “Vocalese,” which went on to win seven Grammy Awards. Hendricks also developed a singing group at UT, Vocalstra, whose performances employ his technique. The now widely extant cultural art form was created by Hendricks for Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, which made them the NUMBER ONE JAZZ VOCAL GROUP IN THE WORLD for five consecutive years.

Hendricks was personally chosen by DUKE ELLINGTON as featured Vocalist in the World Premiere performance of Ellington’s first Sacred Concert. Hendricks also was awarded the EMMY, IRIS AND PEABODY AWARDS for his CBS Television Documentary “SOMEWHERE TO LAY MY WEARY HEAD,” in which he also starred and narrated.

This summer, Hendricks was among seven jazz greats added to the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame. Other living legends added were Annie Ross, Johnny Mandel, and Randy Weston. Receiving the honor posthumously were jazz legends John Coltrane, Tito Puente, and Dave Lambert. Hendricks and Ross performed together at the event.
