Tent City is Set to Celebrate 20 years of Advocacy

Posted Sep 23rd, 2009 by Ken Leslie  Category: Community Interest,

Started in 1990 as the Homeless Awareness Project, 1Matters Tent City will celebrate 20 years of volunteer effort helping the unhoused have a voice in the system.

Set for October 30th to November 1st at Civic Center Mall, organizers say the need this year is more desperate than in years past due to high unemployment and foreclosures. “The unhoused of today are the families with children that lived right next door to you yesterday, we must as a community respond” says founder, Ken Leslie.

One response is the community-wide Winter Clothing Drive to take place 10/1– 10/26. Winter coats, hats, gloves, sweatshirts, boots, socks, and backpacks can be dropped off at all City of Toledo and suburban fire stations. These include Perrysburg, Perrysburg Township, Maumee, Rossford, Oregon, Monclova, Springfield, Lake Township, and Sylvania & Township fire stations. Many churches, schools, and businesses are sponsoring their own drives as well.

Other responses include the doubling of the medical, dental, food, and other critical services provided on Saturday of Tent City weekend through Project Homeless Connect. Also planned are a Mayoral Candidate Poverty Forum on Friday, Community Barbecue Dinner on Saturday, and a Celebrity Pancake Breakfast and Worship Service on Sunday.

Tent City is again sponsored by Cherry Street Mission, Mildred Bayer Clinic for the Homeless, Mercy Health Partners, Toledo Area Ministries & the Toledo Area Alliance to End Homelessness and the City of Toledo.

For more information there is an organizational Tent City planning meeting 7 pm Thursday night (9/24) at the Red Cross Headquarters, 3400 W. Central Ave.

The press is welcome to attend the above meeting for additional video and quotes if necessary.
