Lourdes College and the Sisters of St. Francis are celebrating Earth Week with a packed list of activities aimed at shedding light on environmental issues. The Earth Week schedule includes:

Monday, April 19: Tap Water vs. Bottled Water Taste Test

Bottled water is both a popular product and a major contributor to pollution – filling landfills and burning up precious fossil fuels at an alarming rate. Is bottled water really better? Lourdes’ Tap Water vs. Bottled Water Taste Test will put participants to the challenge. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. by the Welcome Center located in McAlear Hall. Recycled biodegradable cups will be used for the challenge and facts about tap and bottled water will be presented at the testing station as well. Sylvania Franciscan Academy student Natalie Thompson will share her state-qualifying science project about water quality at 11:15a.m. and 1p.m.

Monday, April 19: Life Lab Nature Experience

Participants will experience nature up-close and personal in the Lourdes College Life Lab. Refreshments will be provided. Open to a maximum of 30 participants. To make a reservation, call 419-824-3691. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Learning Center Hall.

Tuesday, April 20: Sylvania Franciscan Academy Composting Display

Under the direction of Lourdes College, students at the Sylvania Franciscan Academy have conducted school-wide composting this year. Sylvania Franciscan Academy student Rachel Perzynski will share her state-qualifying science project about composting at 11:15 a.m. and 1p.m. in McAlear Hall.

Tuesday, April 20: Carbon Footprint Quiz and Green Pledge

Community members will also be invited to test their carbon footprints through a campus-wide quiz. Participants will then be invited to share their results – which will be tabulated and shared publically at the end of the week, where members of the community may sign up for the Lourdes College “pledge to be green.”

Tuesday, April 20: Prayer for Peace Holy Hour

The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania will lead a Prayer for Peace Holy Hour focusing on Mother Earth. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Queen of Peace Chapel.

Wednesday, April 21: Environmental Club Waste Audit Presentation

This spring, the Environmental Club student organization, led by advisors Jim Chamberlain, Biology Instructor, and Sr. Marya Czech, Assistant Professor of Biology, conducted a waste audit on Lourdes College. The group will share their results during a presentation held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. by the Welcome Center in McAlear Hall.
