Lourdes Appold Planetarium goes psychedelic with Fractals

Posted Mar 31st, 2010 by Heather Hoffman  Category: Education

spring, audiences of all ages can journey into the infinitely complex and visual world of fractals at the Lourdes College Appold Planetarium. Fractals, the Planetarium’s newest show, shares the world of fractals or endlessly repeating patterns made from simple algebraic equations. Fractals can be seen at 7:30 p.m. on the follow Saturdays:

April 10 April 17 April 24 May 8 May 15 May 22

While fractals are mathematical abstractions, audiences commonly recognize patterns in nature such as shapes in trees, lightning, coastlines, insects, bacteria, seashells and more – all which can be found within a fractal zoom. Each fractal tells the story of the processes that created it — whether the erosion of a canyon, the evolution of a galaxy, or the computation of an equation.

Shows at the Appold Planetarium are limited to 50 and often sell out. For tickets and show availability contact Dr. Laura Megeath, Appold Planetarium Coordinator, at 419-517-8897 or email planetarium@lourdes.edu. Visit www.lourdes.edu/appold for more information.
