Posted Apr 16th, 2010 by Rhonda Sewell  Category: Community Interest, Toledo.com

For its third year, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is swinging out and blaring its horns to the up-tempo as we celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month from noon to 5p.m. on Saturday,April 24 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St.

This free celebration will feature more than 13 bands and more than 60 performers live on three different Library stages in the Wintergarden, McMaster Center and in the Huntington Meeting Room! A Bang a Drum! activity is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. for youth in the Children’s Library at Main. Observed each April, Jazz Appreciation Month is celebrated nationally and internationally, and it is the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History which operates the world’s most comprehensive set of jazz programs to honor the month.

Jazz is an American musical art form first started in the early 20th century in African American communities in the South. Its influence is based on West African and European traditions.

This is the third year that local pianist Charles W. McDaniel, secretary/treasurer of the Professional Musicians of Northwest Ohio (Local 15-286 AFM), has assisted the Library in presenting this appreciation event.
