Music in Our Schools 2010 Finale Concerts – Waite and Sylvania Northview partner side-by-side with the Toledo Symphony

Young musicians from the area’s public schools will enjoy the chance of a lifetime in late April and early May—they will partner with their professional counterparts in a side-by-side concert led by the Toledo Symphony’s Resident Conductor, Chelsea Tipton II.

Next Tuesday, April 20th, the Toledo Symphony (TSO) joins forces with the Waite High School Band and Orchestra at Waite High School, and on May 4th the TSO performs with the Sylvania Northview High School Bands and Orchestras at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.

These concerts are a fitting finale to a long year of collaboration and study between the TSO and the two high schools. The TSO’s Music in Our Schools program is designed to provide much more than one-time contact with young high school musicians.

“This is a motivational as well as practical year for our partner schools—all of our activities meet Ohio academic content standards for technical and musical development,” says TSO Director of Educational Programs Jessica Aeschliman, “It’s incredibly inspirational. Some of our students have gone on to music degrees and private study in music, because of Music in Our Schools.”

Schools that are selected to partner for the program choose from a large of menu of options—side-by-side concerts, in school ensemble visits, masterclasses, attending TSO concerts, and more, which are customized to the needs and goals of the individual schools.

“I am so thrilled that our students have the opportunity to be a part of this project,” says Pamela Thiel, Director of the Northview Orchestra, “The chance for our students to work with true professional musicians is rare indeed. This interaction has not only been of enormous benefit, but it has been a great joy as well. We are all very thankful to the Symphony for this wonderful experience!”

In any given month, Music in Our Schools participants experience sight-reading sessions with TSO musicians, individual coachings for solo and ensemble contests and performances by TSO mini-ensembles, such as the woodwind quintet and brass quintet.

Professional development is also a cornerstone of the program. Teachers attend TSO and Toledo Youth Orchestra rehearsals and forge relationships with TSO educational leaders, like Dr. Kenneth Thompson, TYO conductor and Assistant Professor at Bowling Green State University.

Music in Our Schools is now in its fifth year. The TSO’s previous partners include Maumee, Sylvania Southview, Bowsher, Start and the Toledo School for the Arts.
