A Toledo tradition the Salon des Refusés show is an exhibit for art not accepted by the Toledo Area Artists (TAA) Exhibition. The TAA show is held each year in the Toledo Museum of Art and is sponsored by the Toledo Federation of Art Societies and The Toledo Museum of Art. While the TAA show attracts many entries from local artists and individuals all over the country who once had roots in the seventeen county area closest to the Toledo Museum of Art, only a fraction of the entries are able to be accepted. On May the 18th, Electronic notification goes out to submitting artists to tell them whether their work has been accepted to the 2010 annual TAA Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Registration for the Salon Show will begin immediately following TAA notification of the 2010 juried selection. Registrants can forward their electronic rejection notification to Salon Show intake chairman Harry Daugherty at They should also submit their entrance fee and application to Harry Daugherty, 7109 Manore Rd.,Whitehouse OH 43571. Applications for the Salon Show are available at many of the galleries in Toledo, including the Parkwood Gallery, as well as American Frame in Maumee. This year’s Opening Reception will be held the same evening as the opening of the TAA Show, on Friday July the 9th from 6-10 p.m. at the Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood Ave., in Toledo. Awards for this years show will include monetary prizes for Best of Show, 1st and 2nd Place, as well as Ribbon Awards for additional outstanding works created in the spirit and techniques of famous artists. Attendees to the Opening Reception will have until 8:30 p.m. to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The Salon Show Awards Assembly at the Parkwood will be held at 9 p.m. after the awards at the museum to make sure patrons and artists can attend both events.

This year two new features have been added to the Salon Show. First for a small increase in fee, late registration will be available during drop off dates of Monday June the 28th, or Tuesday June the 29th at the Parkwood Gallery from 8:30a.m.-4:30 p.m. In addition to the Opening Reception evening, an additional Friday evening has been added on August the 6th from 6-10 p.m., for the viewing of the Salon Show. Art Patrons who attend, the “It’s Friday” event at the Museum or other gallery events in the city on Friday evening will also have an opportunity to view the Salon Show that evening.

The Toledo Salon des Refuses show grew out of the realization that due to the popularity of the TAA Show and the limited space available for display, many outstanding works of art would not be viewed by the public. Entries not displayed in the museum this year, may be conveniently viewed at this year’s Salon Des Refuses Exhibition across the street from the Toledo Museum of Art at the Parkwood Gallery from July 9 through August 20th.

The Salon des Refusés Show, which in French means “exhibit of rejects,” takes its name from an exhibition held in Paris in 1863 by Napoleon III for those artists whose work had been rejected by the prestigious Paris Salon. The official Paris Salon was an important event on the French arts calendar; paintings were selected by jury, prizes awarded, and paintings were bought by collectors and government.

In Paris many artists now considered masters had their work rejected. Rejected paintings had a red R stamped on the back for refusé (rejected). The legendary original Salon des Refusés show of 1863 included a who’s who of future impressionist masters like Manet, Degas and Renoir. Other famous artists included that year were Paul Cezanne, Camille Pissarro and James Whistler. The Salon des Refusés of 1863 is regarded as a turning point in the history of art and some describe the show as ‘the most convenient date from which to begin a history of modern painting. The Toledo Salon des Refusés show has been held in various downtown locations since its inception and has also earned a reputation for quality exhibitions among area art critics.
