TOLEDO, OH — The Toledo Youth Philharmonic Orchestra has been selected to perform at this year’s Ohio Music Educator’s Association Conference in Cincinnati, OH on January 27, 2011 at 4 P.M. The 90-member Philharmonic Orchestra will be one of seven orchestras to perform at the conference out of an applicant pool of several hundred student performance groups. Other groups performing during the conference include the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Cleveland Conservatory of Music Concert Orchestra, the Bowling Green State University Men’s Chorus, and the Wilmington H.S. Wind Ensemble.

Ken Thompson, music director of the Toledo Youth Orchestras, says “We are very proud to have been selected for this performance, as it provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the youth education programs of the Toledo Symphony, and display the talents of our many fine young musicians.”

President of Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Kathy Carroll, says “Winning a spot where you represent yourself, your orchestra, and your community is great for everyone. We’re proud of our partnership with these musicians – they are our future!”

The Toledo Youth Orchestra is comprised of two orchestras, the Philharmonic conducted by Dr. Kenneth Thompson, and the Symphonic conducted by Mr. Wasim Hawary. The orchestras bring together approximately 170 of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan’s most talented students from 35 area schools. In addition to the performance with the Toledo Youth Orchestra, Thompson states that, “about 1/3 of our students were selected to perform with their regional orchestra or band and the Ohio All-State Band or Orchestra.”

The next performance for both the Philharmonic and Symphonic Orchestras will be at 4PM on February 13, 2011 at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle. The concert is free and open to the public.
