Musician Rosanne Cash Produces Art Poster With Toledo Printmaker

Steve Mockensturm bumped into Rosanne Cash via Twitter, the popular social media channel, and didn’t waste a lot of time showing off his graphic design skills. Cash was to play Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor the following night.

“I threw a logo together. She was talking about her band. Goofin’ on typography a little bit. I half-jokingly asked if I should bring t-shirts to the show and she went for it. I made 20 shirts and delivered them backstage.”

Mockensturm and his company, Madhouse, operate Capital A, a grass-roots, co-operative screen printing and letterpress shop in downtown Toledo, Ohio. They have done work for Crowded House, Wilco, The Black Keys and Josh Rouse among others.

Not long after the Ann Arbor meeting, Mockensturm was approached by Cash to produce an art poster featuring a line from her recent memoir, ‘Composed.’ The result is a limited edition of just over 100 fine art prints.

“We print everything by hand, with love. All prints are signed and numbered, and in this case Rosanne wanted to sign the work as well. I could not have been happier.”

Cash remarks, “It’s fabulous. When I first saw it, I got goosebumps. Steve is a great artist.”

The first 25 artist prints were sold for charity last month at a benefit for The Secret City in New York. The remaining are available for purchase through the Capital A website.

Rosanne Cash is the eldest child of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto. Over a 30-year career she has released 12 albums and recorded 11 No. 1 singles. Her memoir ‘Composed’ was released to great acclaim in 2010. For more information, please visit: www.rosannecash.com
