(Released September 27, 2011) – October is Family History Month and we’re celebrating at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library! Join us in our Local History and Genealogy Department at Main Library, 325 Michigan St., for two Open House events and tours to learn more about our collection and services: Tuesday, October 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, October 22 from 10 a.m. – noon.

In 2001, Congress first passed a resolution introduced by Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who wrote, “By searching for our roots, we come closer together as a human family.” Family history enthusiasts continue to celebrate Family History Month every October. Family Tree Magazine states that during this special observance, people host parties, spend time at their public library’s history departments, asks relatives burning family history questions, organize photos in albums, jot down family stories, or tell their state representative how much they appreciate their public library’s genealogy resources.

The Library’s Local History and Genealogy Department is a special place located on the third floor of historic Main Library. The department is a reference department with its collections divided into two major areas: the local history of Toledo and Lucas County, Ohio; and genealogy. The department holds many treasures such as the Labor History Room and the Blade Rare Book Room, along with special genealogy collections, Lucas County newspapers on microfilm, and a host of local government records. Please join us for these Open House events and see how to start working on your family tree and what the library can do to help.

The Library’s Family History Month Open House tours on October 18 and 22 are FREE and open to the public!
