Internationally recognized and respected Middle Eastern Dance (“Belly Dance”)
Master instructor and performer, Cassandra Shore, will be visiting Toledo for a 2-day seminar February 25th and 26th of 2012–an extremely rare opportunity. Women of all shapes, sizes and ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. Over the course of the two day workshop four classes are offered: Technique, Combinations, Finger Cymbals and Veil Use. By adjusting to student experience level, Cassandra is able to ensure each class is accessible to ALL students regardless of dance experience by adjusting the level of difficulty in movements, either simplifying for students new to the dance, or adding “layers” and more intricate footwork for the advanced dancer. From beginners to professionals, all will find “take homes” from Casandra to practice and develop, and a healthy, low-impact work out is always guaranteed. The seminar will be held at The Grand Plaza Hotel (formerly The Crown Plaza) in Downtown Toledo, and will also feature costume and accessory vendors including industry favorite, Dahlal Internationale.
In addition to the weekend seminar, a Saturday evening performance “Alf Laila wa Laila: 1001 Nights” will be offered to the public, showcasing professional Belly Dance/Middle Eastern Dancers from several states(Leyla, Azziza, Kay Louise, Baraka, Amira Star, Theresa of Jawaahir Dance Company, and more!) , but will also include performances from around the globe including China, India and Southern Africa (The Chinese Association of Greater Toledo, Aha Dance Company and ALMA Dance, respectively). Local favorite “global variety show” Leyla & Raq the Casbah will also be performing live music and song from around the world. Tickets for the show are $20 in advance, and $25 the day of the performance. It will be held on Saturday, February 25th in the Ballroom of The Grand Plaza (formerly The Crowne Plaza) in Downtown Toledo, 444 N. Summit Street . Doors open at 7 pm with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and two cash bars. The show will from 8 to 10 pm, which includes a short intermission. This event also supports Independent Advocates of Toledo, a non-profit organization committed to championing and protecting victims of domestic violence.

More on Cassandra…
Cassandra has focused her dance study and performance on the Egyptian Raks Sharqi and Middle Eastern folkloric dances since 1974. Her serious studies began in San Francisco with the legendary performer, Jamila Salimpour, and have continued since 1980 through regular research trips to the Middle East. Cassandra began her career as a cabaret performer, and her work in this area of Oriental Dance continued until 2010.
Since 1984, she has widened the scope of her artistic expres- sion by presenting the dance on the theater stage. In 1989, Cassandra founded Jawaahir Dance Company (www.jawaahir.org), dedicated to bringing the rich folkloric heritage of the Middle East to the theater stage as a living art form. She is currently serving as Artistic Director and choreographer for the Company. Cassandra is a past recipient of the Minnesota Dance Alliance/McKnight Foundation Resident Choreographer’s Award, as well as the MDA/Jerome Foundation Sponsor Pool and Dancer Pool Awards. She taught Arabic women’s dances as adjunct faculty through University College at the University of Minnesota for 15 years.
Since 1992, she has been on the short and prestigious list of the Minneapolis Southern Theater’s presented artists. Cassandra teaches and performs world-wide, and has earned an interna- tional reputation as an Oriental dance teacher, researcher, and performer. She regularly offers workshops, concerts and master classes worldwide, teaching and performing regularly in locations such as Cairo, Egypt, Marrakesh, Morocco, as well as Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, and throughout the United States and Canada.
What people are saying about Cassandra…
“…She is the reason that so many return year after year to continue their dance training. Regardless of your level of dance experience, you come away from her classes a better dancer. As a teacher, she is superb; patient, inspiring but not intimidating. Her technique classes challenge the most competent dancers while bringing newer students up to new levels of achieve- ment. As a performer, Cassandra has that unique power to make the music visible with her movement. She draws you in and makes you a part of the music.”
