This spring, Appold Planetarium visitors can experience the excitement of the early days of space exploration in Dawn of the Space Age. Viewers will travel through time, from the launch of the first artificial satellite Sputnik to the state of the art International Space Station. This computer-animated odyssey puts viewers in the cockpits of the first manned space missions and on the lunar surface with the Apollo astronauts.
Dawn of the Space Age begins with the launch of Sputnik and the beginnings of the Space Race. The show includes a visual tour of important Russian space history as well as the American Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle programs. Along the way are glimpses of the Viking mission to Mars and the Voyager mission to the outer planets. Dawn of the Space Age also explores the International Space Station, the “X-prize” winning private space ship and on to future Mars exploration. Be immersed and overwhelmed with this most accurate historic reconstruction of Man’s first steps into space. With increasing international cooperation and commercial spaceflight, we are now on the brink of a new dawn of the space age!
Shows at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 19 and June 2. A video preview of the show can be found at www.lourdes.edu/planetarium.
