MEDICAL MUTUAL ART COLLECTION DONATED TO
TOLEDO SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
A significant collection of artwork, representing some of the Toledo area’s most important painters stretching over the last fifty years, has been donated by Medical Mutual of Ohio to the Toledo School for the Arts. An exhibition of the selected pieces from the collection is on display at the school’s Gallerie 333, from July 12 through August 10, 2012. A reception celebrating the gift will be offered on Thursday, August 9, 2012 coinciding with the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo August Art Walk.
“It’s important for students to see work done by members of their own community,” says David Saygers, Artistic Director for the Toledo School for the Arts. “It helps them to more easily visualize themselves as artists when they know that excellent work has been done by someone from Toledo.” Artists whose work appears in the collection include well-known Toledo artists H. Pete Beckman, Walter Chapman, John Cook, Gaylord Kimble, Dan Passino, Dorothy Clarke and Earnest Spring.
The collection was built throughout the 1970’s and 80’s, and has been continuously on display since. Seeking a suitable home for the more than 150 paintings and prints, Medical Mutual of Ohio Communications Manager, Mark Tooman approached the school, which also houses the collection of the Toledo Federation of Arts Societies, and regularly exhibits work from over eighty years of local art purchases.
The school was eager to accept the collection. “It’s impressive to see works by artists that helped to build Toledo’s art community,” explains Saygers. “The region produced several significant landscape painters, and the Medical Mutual collection is notable for that. This gift will provide an opportunity to keep these works available for the public to enjoy.”
The manager of Gallerie 333, Leslie Ann Taylor. helped to select and move the collection. “There’s a lot of beautiful work which we’ll be able to regularly show in our gallery. It’s a great chance for our students to see these important paintings, and also be involved in selecting and creating exhibitions in years to come.”
Gallerie 333 maintains a regular schedule of exhibitions throughout the year. The gallery is located in the Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th Street, Toledo. For a schedule of Summer Gallery hours, contact the Toledo School for the Arts at 419-246-8732.
