The Links’ Learning Academy inaugural Community Day scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 4 will feature no-cost resources available in the Greater Toledo area for youth, families and senior citizens. Hosted by the YWCA of Northwest Ohio, located at 1018 Jefferson Avenue, in partnership with the Toledo Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, this event is FREE and open to the public. The event is designed to present informational learning stations, health screenings, children’s activities, hip-hop exercise and much more. Lunch will be provided to participants.
This occasion provides an opportunity for the YWCA of Northwest Ohio and The Links, Incorporated to introduce the Girls Circle program ( www.girlscircle.com ) to the general public and other community stakeholders. Girls Circle is a model of structured support groups for girls from 9-18 years old. The program is designed to foster self-esteem, help girls maintain authentic connection with peers and adult women in their community, counter tendencies toward self-doubt, and allow for genuine self-expression through verbal sharing and creative activity. Research has shown that young girls who participate in Girls Circles reveal statistically significant improvement in four long-term outcomes:
a decrease in self-harming behavior
a decrease in rates of alcohol use
an increase in attachment to school
an increase in self-efficacy
Representatives from the YWCA with support from the Toledo Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will cover the following topics:
What is a Girls Circle?
How Does it Work in Different Youth Serving Sectors? (i.e. education, juvenile justice, mental health, child welfare, community-based organizations)
Current Research Outcomes/Findings
Methods of Implementation
Please join us for this informative and collaborative event.
