FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 29, 2012
Library House Gallery is pleased to announce its new art exhibition, “Tectonic Systems & Chess Pieces”, by ceramicist Timothy A. Wallace. The opening reception will be held on August 11, 2012, 7 P.M to 9:30 P.M. in Grand Rapids, OH. The exhibition will run through October 14, 2012.
The fragility of the ceramics medium can be seen as either an asset or a restriction. For Tim Wallace, this dichotomy is both. With Tectonic Systems, Tim explores these dueling characteristics of clay and form through creation, deconstruction and reconstruction. Using these innate ceramic processes he has created a body of work that reflects the organic, aesthetic and historical nature of clay, form and earth.
For Tim Wallace the symbolic nature of the traditional chess set has always been intriguing. However, the challenge of bringing something fresh to these forms could not be satisfied solely with the potter’s wheel. As a result, Tim has pushed the boundaries of these classical forms as well as the limitations of inactivity and scale often posed by singular wheel thrown vessels. His romantic highly-charged chess characters are somewhat abstract but always suggestive and active.
Tim grew up in Mid Coast Maine in the small town of Owls Head. In 2000 Tim graduated from the University of Southern Maine, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in Ceramics. He then moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics at The George Washington University (GWU), graduating with honors in 2003. In 2001 Tim was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship and then went on to become an adjunct professor at GWU from 2002 to 2004. In 2004 Tim joined the faculty of the Ceramics Department at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. where he is currently teaching. Tim is now “throwing” sculptural vessels on the wheel, exploring the volume, expansion, fluidity, and implied movement of the clay.
