Have you seen the Robert L. and Posy Huebner collection located in the Children’s Library at Main, 325 Michigan St.? Established in 2004 through a generous bequest, the collection blends the donors’ passion for art and children, and is one of the largest collections of art from children’s books housed in a public library.
Original art from Clifford the Big Red Dog, Strega Nona, Fancy Nancy and other popular characters are part of the collection which comprises over 170 illustrations, many by regional and award-winning artists.
The collection recently acquired five pieces from the book Ollie’s Halloween by Olivier Dunrea. The author/illustrator has generously agreed to donate all proceeds from this new purchase to his dog rescue organization, Sophie’s Emergency Rescue Fund (S.E.R.F.) www.olivierdunrea.com/SERF.html
Other acquisitions this year include two pieces from Marblehead illustrator, Jodie McCallum, and the cover illustration from Posy by award-winning Scottish illustrator Catherine Rayner and written by Linda Newbery. (During the summer, McCallum and her husband Grant provided a writing and art workshop in the Children’s Library).
Children’s librarians state that this teaching collection will help children understand that the illustrations in their favorite books began as original drawings, paintings, photographs or other media. “Knowledge of the creative process used to make picture books will awaken, inspire and nurture the imagination of children,” said Nancy Eames, Library Youth Services Manager.
Visit the collection in the Children’s Library at Main for a chance to view a marvelous introduction to art and a delight for book lovers of all ages. Today, 37 pieces of the collection can also be admired at eight of our branch locations: Heatherdowns, Holland, Lagrange, Mott, Point Place, South, Waterville and West Toledo libraries.
