On Friday, February 15 at 7 p.m., Way Library will show the film “The First Grader.” Full of vitality and humor, this inspirational bio-drama profiles the amazing determination of Maruge (Oliver Litondo) an 84-year old Kenyan who desires to claim his right to an education in the country for whose freedom he bravely fought 50 years earlier, ultimately enduring the extreme and harsh conditions of the British detention camps. Naomie Harris plays the head teacher who advocates for Maruge’s admission to the school where he would learn to read alongside six-year olds. This heartwarming film is based on the true story of one man’s fight for his rights in order to overcome the burdens of his past.
Admission and refreshments are free. This installment of the library’s Reel Art International and Art Film series is sponsored by Waterford Bank, N.A.
