Ten midwestern comics to be spotlighted

TOLEDO, OHIO – Exile Media is proud to announce the creation of “Hashtag Rustbelt,” a DVD featuring ten rising stars of the Midwest standup comedy scene. Filming for the DVD will take place over two Wednesdays, April 17 and 24, at Connxtions Comedy Club in Toledo, Ohio.

“Standup comedy is in the middle of a renaissance right now,” says Keith Bergman, founder of Exile Media and one of the ten featured comedians. “But what many people don’t know is that there’s a vibrant comedy underground right in their own back yard. The people you’ll be seeing on TV in the next few years are getting their chops right now playing clubs and small rooms right here in Ohio and around the midwest.”

“Hashtag Rustbelt” will feature mostly comics from the Toledo area, with some talent hailing from as far away as Youngstown and Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Once you get on the road, you start networking with other comics from all over the place,” Bergman says. “These people have all driven to gigs together, slept on each others’ floors, workshopped jokes together, shared information and helped each other along the way. It’s a pretty close-knit family, and that’s what makes a collaborative effort like this so much fun.”

Featured comics for the April 17 taping include Bergman, Stu McCallister, D.K. Hamilton, Steve Wherry, and Erik Cribley. On April 24, the lineup includes Owen Thomas, Mike Szar, Dustin Meadows, Anthony Martinez, and Thom Brush.

All ten comics have varied styles and outlooks on life, Bergman points out, but are unified by their experiences performing in the midwest. “When you work on the coasts, the goal seems to be to get on TV, to write these short, peppy jokes and not really delve into a topic. We go out into clubs and bars here on our own home turf, and the crowds can be rougher, and you really have to stand your ground, work for the audience’s attention, and bring them around to the way you see things. It’s a little more raw and gritty, but I think it makes what we do a lot more genuine and real, and it makes for a much funnier show.”

Both the April 17 and 24 shows are part of Connxtions Comedy Club’s weekly series showcasing local talent, and tickets are $8 (or $4 with a valid student ID). Reservations for the DVD tapings are strongly suggested. The club box office can be reached at (419)867-9041.

The “Hashtag Rustbelt” DVD will be released later this summer, and will be available online and from local retailers.
