An estimated 5,000 Northwest Ohio residents will be joining together at
Levis Commons on Saturday, May 11, 2013 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The non-competitive 5K walk celebrates breast cancer survivors, educates people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk, and to raises funds for research and treatment.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has raised over $400 million nationally with 165 walks held across the country. 2013 marks the 7th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) event in Northwest Ohio which has raised just over $500,000 since its inaugural year. The 2013 goal for MSABC is to raise $126,000 locally to support the ACS mission to save lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back against breast cancer.

Participants will enjoy a wide range of activities at this year’s Making Strides event. Several local organizations will be stationed around the 3.1 mile walk route to entertain walkers. Perrysburg High School Marching Band and Sheltered Reality Steel Drum Band will pump up the crowd with performances throughout the morning, in addition to awe-inspiring routines by the Perrysburg Twirling Sophisticates. Jazzercise will return again to lead walkers in a warm-up routine at 9:15 a.m. before the walk begins, and several mascots including Rocky and Rocksy from The University of Toledo and Yogurt Vi will make an appearance that morning. A new addition to the entertainment line-up this year is a “Survivor Strut” where survivors will parade across the stage and celebrate how long they have been cancer free.

Celebrating survivors is a key element in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event and there will be no shortage of special treatment for those who have been victorious in their fight against breast cancer. Survivors are invited to a special “Survivor Tent” where they will receive a special recognition item and be pampered with free chair massages and hair wrapping.

Sponsors of this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Northwest Ohio event include: The University of Toledo Medical Center, First Federal Bank, Northwest Ohio Chevy Dealers, Kroger, The Thompson Williams Group at Merrill Lynch, The Town Center at Levis Commons, 13 ABC, 101.5 The River and 92.5 Kiss FM.

More than 230,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States in 2012. While the for-profit sector saw declining demand for products and services over the past few years, the opposite is true for organizations like the American Cancer Society who have seen demand for their patient services increase during the economic downturn. Funds raised by events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are critical to meeting the needs of those affected by the disease.

About the American Cancer Society:
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
