(Sylvania, Ohio) – Sneakers, luminaries, and cancer education? It must be the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, a collaborative event to celebrate survivorship and raise funds to save more lives and create a world with more birthdays.

The annual Sylvania Relay For Life will be held at Southview High School, 7225 Sylvania Ave, Sylvania, Ohio on Friday, May 31 starting at 6:00 PM and running, no pun intended, until midnight. The public is invited to attend and participate.

The Relay For Life brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for camaraderie, food, music and entertainment, and an evening under the stars – all while team members take turns walking or running on a track. Registration is still open to all participants and is available at the event starting at 5 PM.

Relay For Life kicks off at 6 with a Cancer Survivors Lap and reception to celebrate life. During the evening, team members will be walking around the track and participating in team events like Tug a War, Hula-hoops, Frozen T-shirt, a Scavenger Hunt, and a Project Runway-like contest where fashion is created using newspaper and duct tape. Later in the evening, a Luminaria Ceremony honors those who are battling cancer and remembers those who have lost their fight. Live music will also be played to support all participants.

“Relay For Life brings communities together,” said Angie Trout, relay chair. “We honor each person who has been touched by this disease while raising money for much needed cancer research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.” In Sylvania, our goal is to raise $25,000 for cancer research. Additionally, the relay will promote awareness of the successes people have had in battling cancer and to support the individuals still struggling with the disease to support ongoing research and progress.

Sponsors of the relay include: Meijer, Promedica Flower Hospital, K-100, and Outback Steakhouse.

About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end cancer for good. As a global grassroots force of three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping you stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, helping you get well by being there for you during and after a diagnosis, by finding cures through groundbreaking discovery and fighting back through public policy. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.8 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, nearly 14 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
