Lucas the Elephant Calf Celebrates Second Birthday

Forget the terrible twos; Lucas the African elephant is making two terrific! On Saturday, June 1, Lucas will enjoy cake and enrichment gifts at the Toledo Zoo.

At 10:30 a.m., Lucas gets his enrichment presents, hand-crafted by ZOOTeens and zookeepers. Then at 1:30 p.m., he gets a tasty elephant-sized cake the Zoo’s Catering Department prepared for him.

No one is sure what Lucas, like many 2-year-olds, will think of his presents or birthday cake, but whether this pachyderm is puzzled or purposeful, it will be fun to watch. His birthday party, sponsored by McDonald’s, is free with regular Zoo admission. Learn more at toledozoo.org.

Lucas has changed a lot since his birth two years ago, when he stood 36 inches tall and weighed 305 pounds. Today, he stands about 60 inches tall and weighs about 1,630 pounds – truly abig birthday boy.

Some things stay the same, though. Lucas is still charming visitors with his favorite activities of chasing ducks that wander into his exhibit (with some adorable elephant trumpeting) and “helicoptering,” or spinning in circles.

While you’re at the Zoo, don’t miss Wild Walkabout, sponsored by Mercy, which takes you to the fascinating natural world of Australia. Your adventure starts with a walk-through wallaby exhibit and continues with dingoes, cassowaries and more. In the Reptile House, check out the huge saltwater crocodile brought here by Block Communications, Inc. – at 17 feet long, the largest in North America! — along with some of Australia’s deadliest snakes. Or relax in the Museum of Science with a Great Barrier Reef exhibit that showcases the intrigue of Australia’s coastal waters.

And if that weren’t enough, the Zoo’s twin polar bear cubs, Suka and Sakari, are on exhibit daily at the Arctic Encounter. Travel from Africa to Australia to the Arctic – all in one day at your Toledo Zoo.
