On Sunday, August 11, area individuals and families are invited to Helping Hands for Haiti, an annual fundraising event benefiting the Brad Reddick School in the Savanette, Haiti. In 2006, Perrysburg-based Missions International of America (MIA) built and has since operated the school for 300 children from kindergarten through sixth grade.

This fundraising event will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 601 E Boundary St., Perrysburg, from 2 to 8 p.m., and will feature food, live music, clowns, face painting, inflatables, games, a silent auction, bake sale, pie contest and more! Admission is free.

The benefit will offer opportunities to sponsor a Haitian child for $100 a year to cover the costs of a uniform, food, books and payroll for teachers.
Haitian Circle of Life Bead merchandise will be available for purchase, including jewelry, crosses and coasters. The artisans, who are mostly women, make $400 a year by making jewelry and other items from magazine pages and scrapbook paper.

Missions International of America was started in 2002 by Jay and Jan Nielsen. In addition to the Brad Reddick School, MIA has run medical, dental and optical clinics; installed wells; introduced various micro-economy projects; and is working on a Farm Resource Center will teach Haitian farmers about modern agricultural techniques.
