"STEM in the Park"

What do you get when you cross a giant bubble,
a snake, and an electric vehicle?

You get… STEM in the Park!

STEM in the Park is a family day of hands-on fun at Bowling Green State University (rain or shine) featuring a free lunch (catered by Tony Packos), take-home STEM activities, and everything from sea creatures to pop rockets. STEM in the Park 2013 will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Perry Field House at BGSU.

STEM in the Park is the brainchild of Drs. Emilio and Lena Duran, both faculty members at Bowling Green State University. Inspired by Literacy in the Park, a spring on-campus event that brings families in for a variety of literacy-boosting activities, STEM in the Park seeks to increase public engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

STEM in the Park will feature interactive displays and activities created by community partners, local businesses and area universities to engage children of all ages in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Over 60 unique exhibitors will host Hands-on STEM Activity Stations at the event with close to 80 tables of activities that kids from 2-102 can enjoy.

NWO, the Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in STEM Education at BGSU, organizes this free event on campus for the entire northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan community. NWO is a partnership among a number of area universities, K-12 schools and community partners who all come together at this event to showcase innovation and educational opportunities and promote positive attitudes toward STEM teaching and learning.

STEM Activity Station hosts include BGSU’s Marine Lab and Herpetarium, Challenger Learning Center of Lake Erie West, Imagination Station, ERG Environmental Services, PVS Nolwood Chemicals, Ohio Northern University, University of Toledo plus over 50 other institutions and organizations.

Everyone who attends the event will receive free STEM experiments to take home, an event map and free lunch. While at STEM in the Park visitors can set off rockets, pet lizards, play with bubbles, dabble in robotics and make ice cream.

Last year’s event was an incredible success with over 2,500 people from all over northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan in attendance.
This year’s festivities will take place inside Perry Field House with plenty of parking available there.

New this year is the ‘Roots to STEM Pre K-2 Zone’ sponsored by PNC Bank and featuring activities that cater specifically to younger children.

Visit nwocenter.org/STEMinPark for updates and more information and to pre-register to attend the event.

STEM in the Park Presenting Sponsors for 2013 include BGSU, BP, Lubrizol and Verizon.
Supporting Sponsors include Spectra Group Limited, Inc., Cooper Tires, Kroger, Tony Packos, PNC Bank, and Wal Mart.

This is a tremendous opportunity for children and families to meet and engage with scientists, engineers, mathematicians, educators and experts in STEM fields in a fun, exciting way. Don’t miss STEM in the Park!
