FEB. 21-23 (Fri-Sun) UT to present THE OLD MAID & THE THIEF

The University of Toledo Opera Ensemble will perform Gian Carlo Menotti’s comedic opera “The Old Maid and the Thief,” Friday, February 21 through Sunday, February 23 in the UT Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall. Originally created as a radio opera, “The Old Maid and the Thief” will be staged as an old fashioned 1930’s radio show, complete with sound effects and “commercial breaks.”

The performance opens in the context of the fictionalized “NBC Radio Hour” sponsored by Buick. A narrator accompanied by the Buick Belles sets the stage for Menotti’s comedic opera.

“The Old Maid and the Thief” finds two women–an old maid and a young one–vying for the attentions of a man suspected of being an escaped convict. Both women go to absurd lengths to win his heart, while keeping gossiping neighbors at bay.

Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., the Sunday show is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10, $8 for students and seniors, and $5 for students taking Music classes at UT. UT ID required. Tickets are available at the door or through the UT Center for Performing Arts Box Office.
