Auditions for Young Rep’s ‘Bugsy Malone, Jr.’ to be held May 24

Auditions for the Toledo Repertoire Theatre Young Rep’s musical production of “Bugsy Malone, Jr.” will be held Saturday, May 24 beginning at 1 p.m. at 16 Tenth Street. Children ages 7 to 13 are welcome to audition, and are asked to prepare the first 16 bars of one of the following songs from the show: “Bad Guys,” “Tomorrow,” “Only a Fool,” “Tallulah,” or “That’s Why They Call Him Dandy.” Audio samples are available at www.toledorep.org under the “audition” tab. A short dance routine will be taught after the vocal auditions. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes for dancing.

“Bugsy Malone, Jr.” is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the gangster films of the 1920s. Based on the film of the same name, this wild and wacky musical includes plenty of madcap adventure with a swinging score by Paul Williams. Directed by Jill Reinstein, performances will take place at the Toledo Rep August 7-10. Thursday through Saturday shows are at 7 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

To end its 2013-2014 main stage season, the Toledo Repertoire Theatre will present “The New Mel Brooks Musical: Young Frankenstein” for nine performances in June. Based on the 1974 cult-classic movie, the musical tells the story of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, a brilliant medical professor (played by Trent Dorner), who must go to Transylvania to settle the estate of his late grandfather , Dr. Victor Frankenstein (played by Patrick Flanagan). After arriving, he meets his new assistant Igor (played by Patrick Boyer) and the housekeeper Frau Blucher (played by Lydia Schafer). Frederick must decide whether to keep his respectable medical career and socialite fiancée, Elizabeth Benning (played by Lindsey Denham) or embrace his destiny and true love Inga (played by Kristen Kukic) and make a Monster (played by Reed Reamsnyder). Other cast members include Heath Huber as Inspector Kemp, Matthew Johnston as Ziggy the Village Idiot, and Brien Sewell as Harold the Hermit. Members of the singing and dancing ensemble include Aurora Coyle, Scott Dibling, David Driver, Emily Evans, Bridget Harrington, Joshua Mohler, Trey Bain Myers, William Perry, Dianna Reamsnyder, Jill Reinstein, Samanthia Rousos, Michael Rywalski, and Maureen Truffin.

The book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan is brimming with favorite jokes from the movie (“Put the candle back!”), slapstick, and sight-gags. Mel Brooks also wrote new music and lyrics for the show, and the audience favorite, Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” remains in the musical. The production is under the direction of Amy Spaulding-Heuring with music direction by Jamie Dauel and choreography by Ashley Nowak. “Young Frankenstein” will be performed at the 10th Street stage on June 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, and 22 with performances Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.toledorep.org or by calling the Toledo Rep box office from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 419-243-9277.
