Get Involved & Help the Great Lakes Region

Posted May 29th, 2014 by Melinda Hughes-Wert  Category: Community Interest

The Great Lakes region is facing great changes due to the changing climate. Increased algae blooms and pollution as well as shorter periods of ice coverage are just a couple that scientists are already witnessing. Nature Abounds, a national non-profit organization bringing people together for a healthy planet, is seeking volunteers in the Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Watershed basins to get involved.

Volunteers are currently being recruited to be Climate Change Ambassadors. As a Climate Change Ambassador, volunteers will learn about the basics of climate change, changes already happening in the region, as well as changes expected to take place in the future. Volunteers will be trained on how to share the information with friends and family, local officials, the media and the general public.

To become a Climate Change Ambassador, volunteers can attend a half-day training or they can complete a short correspondence course. The in-person trainings will be held in Syracuse NY (June 10), Rochester, NY (June 11) and Toledo, OH (June 18). The project is being made possible with support of Freshwater Future, a non-profit organization that works to ensure the healthy future of our waters in the Great Lakes region.

To attend a Climate Change Ambassador training or to sign up as a Climate Change Ambassador, please contact Melinda at Nature Abounds at either or by calling 814-765-1453.
