Idy Ciss comes to us from Senegal. He credits his grandparents with his natural dance ability. They were well known in their village for their dancing, and it was from them that he received this gift. From the time he was five years old, he was always called upon to perform for special occasions and ceremonies. He credits the love and support of his family and neighbors as the catalyst, which led him to the field of professional dance.

Idy is also a teacher and singer of traditional African songs. His professional debut was with Les Ballets Africans Kolaam Serere. He has performed before presidents of several African countries and appeared on national television in Senegal.

Idy is now a full time member of Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago, offering his expertise as a consultant, choreographer and principal dancer. Idy teaches West African Dance at festivals throughout North America and provides classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Lycee Francais de Chicago, Soulistic Studio & Spa, and Joel Hall Dance Center. Idy was recently awarded The Joseph Holmes Award for Best Choreography in a Music/Dance Program for choreography of Dekkal Thiossane (Rebirth of Culture) by the Black Theater Alliance Awards.

Every since infancy, Yaya Kabo has always been surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of the drum… Yaya Kabo’s destiny held that of a Saurba griot, in the likeness of his father, Nfaly Kabo. Yaya’s interest blossomed at the tender age of four years old. From seven to eleven year of age, Yaya began training under his father and also accompanied him in playing for different events such as circumcision, rites of passage completion, KY’poa, Kayo-Kayo, Nyasvand Coreeran.

By the age of twenty, Yaya was known throughout parts of Senegal as a multi-percussionist griot in his own right. At this time Yaya joined the Silimbo Ballet. With Yaya came a fiery, electrifying, and intense drum master who played with the spirit of the ancients and with an endurance that was to be reckoned with. From that day he lit up stages, along with Silimbo as a whole, with rhythms and choreography, which was often requested by various presidents of Senegal.

Since arriving in the United States, Yaya has traveled the country, allowing others to feel the heat of his percussion artistry. Yaya spent 16 year performing and teaching in Chicago, and has graced the stage with major Chicago African Dance groups such as Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago, Njawa Dance Corporation, Alyo Children’s Dance Company, and Sundance Productions M.P. A.C.

Currently, Yaya Kabo serves as the Artistic Director of ALMA Drum & Dance, the only professional West African Drum & Dance ensemble in Toledo, Ohio. Under Yaya’s direction, the ALMA ensemble has committed to artistic excellence through continuous study, performance, and sharing of the art form with all people.
