Library observes National Friends of Libraries Week

Posted Oct 20th, 2014 by Rhonda Sewell  Category: Community Interest

This is National Friends of Libraries Week! The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will spend this week honoring its dedicated Friends of the Library (FOL) organization.

The local FOL, established in 1970, has more than 1,000 community members. Fifty of these contributors actively volunteer their time to assist the group with fundraising efforts that include gently-used book sales, held at both Classic Gift Shop at Main Library downtown, and at the Book Center, 1301 Reynolds Road (Reynolds Corners Shopping Center).

FOL Coordinator Margi Levy said she is honored to work alongside so many dedicated, indispensable volunteers. “We continually work hard to expand our membership to this valuable organization,” she said. “Most people would be surprised and pleased to learn how many Library services and programs are supported by the Friends.”

What is Friends of the Library? Locally, FOL is a nonprofit organization that encourages, promotes and supports the ongoing development and use of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. Friends of the Library offer support for:
Brown Bag Summer Concerts
Authors! Authors!
Summer Reading Club Programs
Local Branch Activities
Levy Campaigns

“The library has always played such an important role in my life and in my family’s life,” said Friends president Louise Ehrick of Toledo. Mrs. Ehrick has volunteered for FOL 18 years. “I truly enjoy being able to give something back – and being an active member of this group is so rewarding!”

Other current officers of the organization are David Dennis, vice president; Kathy Agoston, secretary; and Dennis Wisebaker, treasurer. The only paid employees are Mrs. Levy and Chris Varwig, manager of the FOL Classics Gift Shop at Main Library and Gail Brant, part-time clerk. These employees are part-time and work closely with the volunteers.

“Our library could not survive without help from our Friends of the Library,” said Library Director Clyde Scoles. “The group has given thousands of dollars to our Library system over the years. They have always been there for us when we need them most.”
