Instructed by Artist Larry Mack and Retail Manager at TMA Heather Blankenship

PRIZM Creative Community has prepared an educational class for thriving artists at any level.
“Art as a Business” will be instructed by Professional Artist Larry Mack and Toledo Museum of Art Retail Operations Manager Heather Blankenship on September 24th from 6-9 p.m. at The Way Public Library. Registration is available at the Way Library information desk or at the PRIZM website www.MyPrizm.com. The $35 registration fee includes a forty plus page packet of information on many aspects of professional artist practices. Students who use their university email to register for the class on the PRIZM website will be permitted to take the class for $25.

Participants will receive information on building a dossier, business plans, marketing, taxes, grants/commissions and many other topics such as insurance, gallery contracts, photographing and shipping your work and more! The goal is to provide participants with a variety of practical career oriented skills, tools, resources, and professional standards to help them develop their artistic practice into a success money making enterprise.

Holland resident and artist Larry Mack obtained his formal education at the University of Toledo and Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a BA and MA in Clinical Psychology. Soon after graduation he began exhibiting and retailing his artwork at art shows. His love of art kept him involved in the artistic community, and eventually he pursued additional training including a couple of years of glass blowing at the Toledo Museum of Art, and welding. His passion for art led him to take a business course which gave him the tools, skills, and courage to pursue a full time career as an artist. Almost twenty years after beginning to show his work, in 1993 he established Lars Glass as a sole proprietor. He has been successful at obtaining a copy write for some of his innovative designs, and licensing 17 glass items which have produced royalty income for over 10 years. The development of the wholesale part of his business in 1998 has led him to being represented in over 150 galleries in the United States and Canada.

Heather Blankenship has 15 years’ experience selling original art of 250 different local artists and numerous international artists. As the Toledo Museum of Art Retail Operations Manager she is experienced with gallery and wholesale operations including marketing, media, promotion and online sales. She will bring to the class her perspective as a gallery manager and the business aspects to be considered including copyrights, reproductions, and royalties. She has collaborated with the Artists Rights Society (ARS) which is the preeminent copyright, licensing, and monitoring organization for visual artists in the United States. Blankenship received a Bachelor’s from Bowling Green State University with additional training from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She has lectured and consulted with countless artists and museum stores.
